Karin Wiench did her diploma in biology at the University in Kaiserslautern. Thereafter she worked at the German Cancer Research Center, Heidelberg, Germany in the Institute of Toxicology and Chemotherapy and received her doctor’s degree with the thesis “Metabolism of N-nitrosamines in the rat and in primary rat hepatocytes, with special regard to glucuronidation”. In 1993 she joined BASF SE Ludwigshafen, Germany working in the department Product safety, Regulations, Toxicology and Ecology. There she is principal toxicologist and heading a unit Regulatory Toxicology, which is responsible for preparing toxicological and ecotoxicological hazard and risk assessments in the framework of different regulatory programmes like REACH and the OECD SIDS High Production Volume Program as well as product stewardship within BASF. She is also BASF’s contact for risk assessments of nanomaterials and is active in different organisations and associations in the field of nanotoxicology (like CEFIC, VCI, NIA, OECD via BIAC). Beside this she participates in the ecotoxicolocial and toxicological research on nanomaterials at BASF and in a number of international research projects. Up to now she is author of 29 peer reviewed publications in the area of nanotoxicology.
